Chapter 3 of tcp/ip Protocol: ip: Internet Protocol
TCP/IP Protocol Chapter 3
IP is the core protocol in the TCP/IP family. IP provides unreliable transmission, which means it does not guarantee that IP packets will successfully reach their destination. IP provides only the best transmission services. Any required reliability must be provided by upper layers (e.g. tcp)
Subnetting reduces the size of internet routing tables because many networks are often accessible through a single entry.
Information about the interface network can be obtained through the ifcongif and netstat commands, including the ip address, subnet mask, broadcast address, and mtu of the interface.
