History of Unix

In 1965, Bell Labs joined a joint effort between General Electric and MIT to build a multi-user, multi-processor, multi-level MULTICS operating system.

It was not until 1969 that MULTICS was halted because work was proceeding too slowly. Ken Thompson (later known as the father of UNIX) already had a program called Star Trek running on GE-635 machines.

But he was slow to react and happened to spot an unused PDP-7 (Digital's mainframe), and Ken Thompson and Dernis Ritchie ported Star Trek programs to PDP-7.
