RIP : Distance Vector Routing Protocol

Metric: Hops, up to 15 hops

How it works: After the first activation, it will send a broadcast to the network. Neighbor routers using the same routing protocol will receive the broadcast packet and take corresponding action. Every 30 seconds, it will send a full routing table update to the neighbor router. If the neighbor is not the same routing protocol, it will drop the packet. RIP uses UDP protocol, port number is 520.

RIP is used on routers and is suitable for companies with more than 3 routers and less than 15 routers.

Pros and cons: Although RIP reduces administrative tasks and improves productivity, RIP consumes network bandwidth.

RIP routing protocol is divided into two versions RIP v1 and RIP v2, the difference between the two: v1 is a classful routing protocol, when announcing routing information does not carry network flooding, v2 is a classless routing protocol, when announcing routing information carries network mask;v1 broadcast routing updates, broadcast address 255.255.255, v2 multicast routing updates, multicast address 224.0.0.9

Experimental procedure:

1. Configure PC and IP addresses of individual routers

2. Configure router RIP separately and view routing table

3. Verification of experimental completion using PC
