For computers connected to a computer network, users must know what resources each computer has.
The characteristics of computer network
The purpose of establishing a computer network is to share resources, and the secondary purpose is to establish a communication system. The computers connected to the network are all "autonomous computers". The meaning of "autonomy" means that they can work independently from the network. They can not follow their own network protocol, but should follow the unified network protocol of the whole network. Computer network is different from distributed system, distributed system is a unified logical whole, its internal structure is transparent to users, and the system can assign work to each computer dynamically. Computer network is a consortium of "autonomous computers" distributed in different geographical locations, which can not be uniformly assigned by the system. So if users want to use network resources, they must know which computer the resources are on.
