I. introduction

Proxy arp is divided into ordinary proxy arp and local proxy arp. The proxy arp function shields the fact that separate physical networks are available to users as if they were on the same physical network.

Common proxy arp: hosts that want to interwork are connected to different layer 3 interfaces of the device.

Local agent arp: the host you want to interwork is connected to the same layer 3 interface of the device.

Second, general agent arp

Hosts in the same network communicate with each other when they are connected to different layer 3 interfaces of the device.

Advantages:

It can be applied to only one device (which acts as a gateway) without affecting the routing tables of other devices in the network. The normal proxy ARP feature can be used when the IP host is not configured with a default gateway or the IP host does not have any routing capabilities.

As shown in the figure, when arp proxy is enabled by Router, hostA can communicate with hostB.

3. Local agent arp

Local Agent arp:

The local agent ARP can achieve layer 3 interworking between hosts in the following three situations:

a. Hosts that want to communicate with each other are connected to different layer 2 isolated ports in the same VLAN

b. After enabling the Super VLAN function, the hosts that want to communicate with each other belong to different Sub VLAN

c. After enabling the Isolate-user-vlan function, the hosts that want to interwork belong to different Secondary VLAN.

When Router enables local proxy arp, hostA can interoperate with hostB.

IV. Configuration

You can enable the arp proxy on the interface:

[Router-Ethernet1/1] proxy-arp enable / / enable proxy arp

[Switch-Vlan-interface10] local-proxy-arp enable / / enable local agent arp
