8: adjust the color level again so that the surrounding background color is close to black.

9: hold down the keyboard Ctrl key while clicking the copy of the red channel, and the image displays the selection. Click the RGB channel in the channels panel, then switch back to the layers panel and press the shortcut key Ctrl+J to copy the selection to the new layer. Click to hide the background layer copy.

10: now you can drag in a new background picture to see the effect.

If you find the white edge noise on the hair of the photo, you can click the [layer]-[trim]-[remove White Edge] command on the menu.
