The difference between OLAP and OLTP
The concept of on-line analytical processing (OLAP) was first put forward by E.F.Codd, the father of relational database, in 1993. He also put forward 12 criteria about OLAP. The proposal of OLAP has aroused great repercussion. as a kind of product, OLAP is obviously different from online transaction processing (OLTP).
Today's data processing can be roughly divided into two categories:
Online transaction processing OLTP (on-line transaction processing)
Online Analytical processing OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing).
OLTP is the main application of traditional relational database, which mainly deals with basic and daily transactions, such as bank transactions.
OLAP is the main application of data warehouse system, supporting complex analysis operations, focusing on decision support, and providing intuitive and easy-to-understand query results.
The following table lists the comparison between OLTP and OLAP.
