Chrome 67 Beta launch: better support for mobile page games, AR, VR
In the upcoming version of Chrome 67, Google will make better use of the sensors in smartphones and bring a better immersive experience to mobile through the new WebXR framework (many API that have integrated VR and AR).
smartphones can act as VR/AR devices because they already have the hardware to display and control the experience, including screens, cameras and most sensors. In the latest Beta version of Chrome 67, Google introduces Generic Sensor API.
in this nutshell, developers can access data from accelerometers, gyroscopes, direction sensors (accelerometers + gyroscopes) and motion sensors (accelerometers + gyroscopes and magnetometers) on smartphones. These API can be used to create web games such as desktop mazes or utilities such as digital compass.
developer previews are not available for WebXR API in the latest Beta version. This upcoming standard is based on the existing WebVR standard and adds the AR experience on top of it. Although it is still in its early stages, WebXR API can be used to create everything from 360-degree video to home online shopping, all of which can be done in a browser.
