GNOME developer Carlos Soriano has just announced that the GNOME 3.30 desktop environment is ready for public testing. It brings back the classic GNOME Classic mode, allowing users to do more with desktop icons. Starting with version 3.28 earlier this year, GNOME developers removed Nautilus file manager for managing desktop icons, but said they would soon bring a GNOME Shell extension to replace it.

As expected, users expressed strong skepticism about whether the latter could provide the same level of convenience. After all, desktop icons stay for years and don't disappear easily.

Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS both come with desktop icons, and the latter even introduced features to help users organize desktop icons in Mojave 10.14. Obviously, most GNU/ Linux distribution users will not give up this feature easily.

In addition to the return of Nautilus file manager, the upcoming GNOME 3.30 desktop environment adds support for Wayland, multi-monitor, and Rubber options.

If you can't wait for the September 30 release, you can now try GNOME Shell 3.30 on top of version 3.28. Or install the latest version of Nautilus and add the Desktop Icons extension.
