PCI DSS, whose full name is Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, is the data security standard for the payment card industry. It is jointly developed by five global payment brands, the founding members of the PCI Security Standards Committee (Visa Inc., MasterCard Worldwide, American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International), to make the international adoption of consistent data security standards.

PCI DSS sets standard requirements for all credit card information institutions involved in the storage, transmission and processing of cardholder data. It includes the requirements of security management, process strategy, network architecture, software configuration, data encryption and so on. PCI DSS applies to all entities involved in the storage, transmission and processing of payment cards, including merchants, third-party payment institutions, card issuers and service providers. PCI DSS includes a set of basic requirements to protect cardholder information and may add additional controls to further improve data security and reduce the risk of data disclosure.

The PCI DSS information security standard has 6 major items and 12 small requirements, and the whole PCI security standard basically revolves around these projects.
