Wine is a compatibility layer for running Windows platform applications in Unix-like systems, as well as free and open source software.

Wine reproduces the running environment of Windows in Unix-like platform by translating system calls, rebuilding the directory structure of Windows system, providing alternative implementation of Windows system library, providing system services, and providing alternative implementation of other commonly used and important applications (such as Internet Explorer, registry editor, etc.). Its performance is quite good because it does not make use of technologies such as virtualization or simulation.

Started in 1993, although there are still many shortcomings, but Wine has been quite mature. Not long ago, Valve, the manufacturer of the well-known game publishing platform Steam, also released Proton, an open source project based on Wine, which can help run games on Steam clients and Windows platforms on Linux systems.
