What are the key points to consider in configuring a distributed cluster scheme?

Users can experience the excellent and stable performance of distributed NAS cluster EonStor CS, as well as the configuration flexibility. According to the demand information of some customers, this paper puts forward several key points to be considered in the design of the solution in order to meet the needs of customers.

Capacity

Capacity is one of the most important factors when choosing the level of data protection. Customers generally provide requirements for raw capacity or available capacity in advance. In Infortrend distributed file system, we use erasure code / copy technology to protect data across nodes. For applications that value capacity, it is recommended that users use erasure codes to protect data, because erasure codes are more effective in capacity utilization. For applications that place special emphasis on data-critical applications, copies will better meet such needs.

EonStor CS also retains Infortrend RAID technology to protect the data of a single node and maintain excellent performance for scale-up. EonStor CS has three RAID levels to choose from:

Performance mode-the highest performance of all RAID modes. The user uses the hard disk to do RAID5.

Balanced mode-users use hard drives to do RAID5. But leave one or more disks for hot backup, which provides better data protection and good capacity usage.

Protected mode-the user uses the hard drive to do RAID 6. Data protection is the highest of all RAID schemas

Users can deploy an EonStorCS cluster with at least 1 node and get the most basic protection level (dedicated distributed file system). Users can also expand the cluster to 144nodes for scale-out. There are two expansion cabinet specifications available for CS vertical expansion: 3U16 and 4U60. A node can connect up to three 3U, 16-disk expansion cabinets, or one 4U, 60-seat expansion cabinet.

Hard disk Typ

When using different types of hard drives, it is inevitable to choose between performance, capacity and cost. Therefore, the type of hard disk is a key element that affects the estimate of the workload. For hard disk types, EonStor CS currently provides 1 configuration type for the time being: HDD nodes-all using HDD.

Each node can also be connected to the expansion cabinet through the SAS 12 Gb / s interface for capacity expansion. CS offers two types of models-3U16 and 4U24. By adding expansion cabinets, each node can support up to 76 hard drives (node: 3U, 16 bits + 1 JB3060) / 84 hard drives (node: 4U, 24 bits + 1 JB3060).

The Infortrend EonStor CS product line has two series. Due to the different number of CPU cores, the two series of CS provide users with different levels of performance. The following table shows the corresponding number of CPU cores and available specifications for each CS series.

The configuration of disk pool and network has been mentioned in the previous "Overview of Infortrend distributed File system". You can click on the link below to read about it.
