Harbor officially joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as its sandbox hosting project. This is a milestone for the Harbor Container Image Warehouse project. As an original project of VMware China R & D Center, Harbor was established and used internally in 2014, and opened up to the community in 2016. In addition to Harbor, VMware previously contributed two projects, Open vSwitch and IO Visor, to the Linux Foundation (Linux Foundation).

"Harbor is one of the crystallization of our long-standing efforts to innovate and actively preach." Said Ren Daoyuan, general manager of VMware China R & D Center. He is also the staunch promoter of Harbor technology incubation and community promotion. "after entering the Chinese and global developer community, Harbor has become the first choice for many enterprise users and partners to manage container images and build cloud native applications. We are honored to work with CNCF to expand the global application of Harbor."

Zhang Haining, founder of Harbor and technical director of VMware China R & D Advanced Technology Center, said: "the success of Harbor depends on the help and support of the community over the years. CNCF's decision will provide more opportunities for the development of Harbor. We hope to strengthen cooperation with the community, encourage more community contributions, and work together to make Harbor a top project in the field of container image management." ‍

"A wide user base and many contributors are the basis for the success of an open source project." Dirk Hohndel, chief open source officer of VMware, said: "We are very pleased that CNCF has acquired Harbor, giving it the opportunity to become one of many excellent open source projects." ‍ Harbor is an open source cloud native registry project that stores, signs and scans storage artifacts and provides a range of advanced functions such as user management, access control, activity auditing, and replication between nodes. As an enterprise-class private registry project, Harbor fills the gap that organizations or applications cannot use public cloud registry or achieve a consistent cross-cloud experience. ‍

Harbor is not only used by many enterprise users from various industries in the production environment, but also integrated into VMware's two native cloud solutions, Pivotal Container Service (PKS) and vSphere Integrated Containers (VIC), as one of its important components.

We look forward to bringing a new phase to Harbor under CNCF hosting. We sincerely hope that more people will join and contribute to the Harbor project. Click "read the original" to learn more about Harbor.
