Facebook has dabbled in hardware, launching Portal and acquiring Oculus, and it seems there are other gadgets in the works: A new report says Facebook is busy preparing for a smartwatch launch in 2022.

The message has some details about the planned device, although Facebook has not officially confirmed that this is happening. Wearables will clearly focus on the two most useful smartwatch features: messaging and health, priced close to cost.

The smartwatch will reportedly come with an "open source version" of Android, just like the latest Oculus VR headset-so Facebook will take Android code released by Google and apply its own features to it.

Another detail revealed by Info is that the smartwatch will have its own phone connection, so you can make and receive calls without connecting your smartphone. The watch should be compatible with Android and iOS devices.

The smartwatch is slated to launch sometime in 2022, with a follow-up reportedly already in 2023, so Facebook seems to want to commit to this new hardware development agenda with regular product releases.

Speaking of these health and messaging features, the watch will certainly be able to connect to all of Facebook's social products and messaging apps, and it will reportedly also support connections to health and fitness devices such as the Peloton bike.

Facebook has undoubtedly witnessed the success of Apple Watch and decided that this is also the market it must enter. If you want to believe rumors, the two companies may soon be competing with each other with their own smart glasses.
