Although domain controllers should provide redundancy to each other, there are platform-specific differences that prevent data from one server from being used to restore another server. You can always use system state or critical volume backups to restore the domain controller that created the backup. If you create a backup AAA on the server AAA, you can use the backup AAA to restore the server AAA.

"however, you cannot use system state or critical volume backups to restore another domain controller or restore that domain controller to different hardware." You cannot use backup AAA to restore the Active Directory environment that exists on server BBB; you cannot use backup of server AAA to "fix" problems on server BBB. Similarly, you cannot restore the backup AAA to the server BBB and expect it to run as the server AAA.

If you must restore the Active Directory backup to another hardware platform, use a full server backup. "for example, if the backup AAA is a full server backup rather than a system state or critical volume backup, you can restore server AAA on a different hardware server for failure recovery in some cases."
