Learn Notes-how to store Exchange contacts

Contacts are items in Exchange that store information about individuals, groups, or organizations. Contacts can include names and email addresses, as well as other information, including IM addresses, actual addresses, birthdays, family information, and photos or images representing the contact.

Contact information is stored in one of two locations:

Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), if the contact is within the organization.

The contact folder or another folder in the user's mailbox (if the contact is outside the organization).

Multiple contact items can represent one person. Exchange uses roles to help group these different contact projects together. A role is a collection of individuals with the same contact information from different sources. In addition to contact information in Exchange, you can also extract information from the recipient cache of mailboxes, hidden folders of IM contacts called QuickContacts, and third-party data source aggregation roles. Unified Contact Store in Exchange makes this aggregation available to IM clients; the only difference is that Unified Contact Store does not aggregate information from AD DS, as shown in figure 1.
