Google is testing support for variable refresh rate (VRR) in the Chrome OS 101development channel, which was first discovered by Kevin Tofel in About Chromebooks. You must enable a logo on chrome://flags#enable-variable-refresh-rate to access the feature, which Google says can be used for "capable displays."

This may mark the upgrade of CHROME OS tablets in the future.

VRR helps prevent screen tearing by synchronizing the refresh rate of the monitor with the frames per second (FPS) of anything on the screen. Google's testing of this feature may show a smoother gaming experience on Chrome OS, which makes sense given that Google has just announced that Steam is about to "launch" Chrome OS. Rumors have also been circulating about the release of three potential game-focused Chromebook, which is only strengthened by the addition of the new Chrome OS logo supported by the RGB keyboard.

On the other hand, VRR support may mark an upgrade in the refresh rate of Chrome OS tablets in the future. As my colleague Dan Seifert pointed out in his comments on Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 and HP Chromebook X2 11, Chrome OS is currently quite bulky in tablet form. Tablets running Chrome OS need VRR-- Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series refresh rates of 120Hz, while iPad Pro supports ProMotion (which is basically another name for VRR) to compete with companies such as Samsung and Apple, which makes scrolling animation smoother.
