Steam's latest survey shows that VR helmet sales are stagnant.

At present, two high-end virtual reality helmets, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, may be incredible technology products, but it seems that most consumers still don't believe that it's worth paying $600 to $800 for them. According to Steam's latest survey, Rift's sales grew by just 0.01% in august, while Vive's sales were flat.

As VentureBeat points out, the previous month's figures were not very optimistic; sales of the two headphones grew by just 0.3 per cent in July. Currently, 0.18% of Steam users have HTC Vive,0.10% users who own Oculus Rift.

For manufacturers, the biggest worry is that July and August are the first two months, and both devices are not subject to inventory restrictions. Consumers can finally buy headphones from local stores or order them online. But few people rushed out to buy it.

So what are these weak numbers? Really, this is a combination; there is no "killer app" that allows people to buy Rift or Vive desperately. Price is still a big problem, especially given the demand for fairly powerful personal computers. It is likely that everyone who wants to buy headphones and early adopters now has one, while other consumers are waiting to see if prices fall, or for elusive "must-have" games / apps to emerge.

Despite these data, virtual reality still has a bright future. Bookings for the cheaper PlayStation VR sold out in minutes, but it was not clear how much inventory retailers had.
