Samsung played down comments by an executive that there could be as many as 1 million Galaxy Folds in the wild. A spokesman for the South Korean company told Yonhap that electronics president Young Sohn may have mentioned the company's initial sales targets for the year. Apparently, foldable phones haven't sold a million units yet.

"One million people want to use it for $2000," Sohn said Thursday at TechCrunch Disrupt in Berlin. "

Yonhap pointed out that Samsung hopes to sell 500,000 Galaxy Fold units worldwide by 2020. The phone maker did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The phone, which lets you fold the 7.3-inch screen in half, was introduced to consumers in September, three months after early critics ran into problems with the screen failing. CNET's Jessica Dockett calls it a beautiful blueprint for foldable phones, but it's still too expensive and fragile. In terms of durability, CNET confirmed that the phone has a service life of about 120,000 times.

This year a wave of foldable phones came out and confirmed that they had entered the market. Often, the price of novel designs is very high. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which costs $1980, there is the Motorola Razr(due Jan. 9), which costs $1500, the Huawei Mate X(currently only available), which costs about $2600, and the Royole Flexpai, which costs $1300. Xiaomi's entrants are still under study, TCL expects to release some products next year, and Google says it is developing prototypes of foldable technology.
