Recently, Elon Musk gave an interview in which he said that all his companies are charities because they seek to improve the future of mankind.

TED director Chris Anderson asked Musk what he thought of billionaire philanthropy. In response, Musk said: "if you care about the reality of good rather than the perception of good, then philanthropy is extremely difficult. SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, The Boring Co. They are all philanthropy. If you say philanthropy is love for mankind, then they are philanthropy."

Mr Musk also said Tesla was "accelerating sustainable energy development". In addition, his space exploration company SpaceX seeks to "ensure the long-term survival of mankind through multi-planetary species". His brain microchip company Neuralink is trying to "use AI (artificial intelligence) to help solve the risk of brain damage and survival." His tunnel digging company is trying to solve the traffic problem. Boring companies are especially important in areas where traffic jams are hell for most people.

Elon Musk's views on philanthropy

However, Mr Musk's view of philanthropy is unconventional. Although he described his company as providing useful goods and services for mankind, he founded for-profit enterprises that helped him become the richest man in the world. If you look at the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk is worth about $255 billion.

This is not the first time Mr Musk has said he thinks direct donations are a waste of time. In an interview with Axel Springer CEO Mathias D ö pfner last month, he said: "if you care about the reality of good rather than what you think of it, then philanthropy is extremely difficult."
