The formatting mentioned below is based on the format of the hard disk's own operating system.
The SAS format instruction comes with a lot of parameter settings. Let's talk about why some tools format quickly, while others take twice as long.
Fast grid:

The so-called fast grid only does a write test on the hard disk and does not do any read function test. This function is only to provide customers with a design that does not quickly delete data based on the operating system and computer CPU memory, and does not conduct a strict read-write test on the hard disk.
Formatting is more passable because there is no read function test.
Format with check:
EST and Seatools (the original tool of Seagate) provide formatting function, that is, the complete read and write test of the hard disk system on the data area, when the write or read test found that there is a slow response of the hard disk sector will be added to the growth list (Glist), the formatting pass is lower than the former, because of the increase in test items.
Additional note: if there is a failure of the magnetic head or the appearance of a large area of continuous bad channels, the format will not pass, and the hard disk will become zero capacity; if the hard disk will be powered off without formatting, the hard disk will also become zero capacity.
