Documents from the Federal Communications Commission show that Amazon's ring is making its first smart light bulb

Ring, Amazon's smart home security company, will produce a variety of smart lighting products. According to FCC filings, the company is about to enter a market dominated by replaceable light bulbs, with floodlights from companies such as Philips Hue dominating the company, which tech writer Dave Zatz discovered on Twitter.

The new ring bulb doesn't have much detail, but FCC filings do show it's equipped with Bluetooth (which makes sense given the name "smart"). It's unclear whether the new smart bulbs will incorporate some built-in motion detection systems or rely solely on other Ring products.

Ring, however, has previously manufactured stand-alone lighting systems such as its floodlights and streetlights that integrate motion sensors to complement the company's other security camera products. The lights also require a $49.99 Ring Bridge accessory to link with other Ring devices, but it's unclear whether the new smart bulbs will do the same.

The fact that Amazon is releasing Ring-branded bulbs and floodlights seems to suggest that, at least for now, Amazon isn't competing directly with home lighting systems like Hue. In other words, once Amazon does start producing smart light bulbs, it's easy to imagine it might not just stay on outdoor and safety-oriented lights.

Amazon hasn't officially announced the new ring bulb, so there's no price or release date, but since the bulb went through FCC review, it probably won't last long until more official news about the smart bulb emerges.
