Not long ago, American operators linked equipment purchases to service contracts, preventing many people from using phones or networks they might not want to use. Devices and mobile services were eventually decoupled, but operators retained deferred installment plans for mobile phones and other products. Verizon is now stepping up its efforts.

Droid Life pointed out (through Android Authority) that Verizon has quietly suspended its 24-month and 30-month equipment repayment contract options, leaving only the longest 36-month option. This means that if you want to buy a phone, tablet, mobile hotspot or most other electronic products from Verizon, your only option is to pay in advance or buy it within three years. You can also choose to pay the balance of the installation plan.

The change comes after AT&T made the same change last year, but T-Mobile still seems to be selling most of their phones with a 24-month plan. If you want to buy a phone from a major carrier and pay it back in less than three years and can't raise money through a third party, then T-Mobile seems to be the only game left in town.

Verizon's official FAQ says: "your specific terms and payment amount are shown in your first bill and your equipment payment installment agreement. If you sign a 24-month or 30-month equipment payment agreement before February 3, 22, your terms will remain unchanged."

Verizon just launched the C-Band 5G network in January, while AT&T also deployed C-Band 5G, both operators can cope with T-Mobile 's if 5G. However, the launch was not plain sailing because international air travel was briefly disrupted by concerns about interference with aircraft equipment.
