Amid calls from politicians to disband the company, the company is also studying the business practices of the Seattle-based technology giant.

Margrethe Vestager, the European competition commissioner, announced the survey, saying that large online platforms did not eliminate the advantages of retail competition for online shoppers.

"European consumers are increasingly shopping online. E-commerce promotes retail competition, bringing more choices and better prices. We need to ensure that large online platforms do not eliminate these benefits through anti-competitive behavior. Therefore, I decided to adopt the term Vestager and keep a close eye on Amazon's business behavior and its dual role as a market and retailer to assess its compliance with the rules of competition. It is worth noting that Vestager has fined almost all major tech giants in the past. Although Google was fined 1.5 billion euros earlier this year, Facebook was fined $122 million in 2017. In addition, last year, he was fined $1.2 billion for violating a series of agreements with Apple under the antitrust law.

The committee announced an antitrust investigation into Amazon, saying it would study "an agreement between Amazon and market sellers, which allows Amazon's retail business to analyze and use third-party vendor data". In addition, the Competition Commission will study the role of data in selecting the winner of the "buy box" and the impact that Amazon may use seller information on choices in competitive markets. If convicted, the commission could impose a fine of up to 10 per cent of Amazon's global turnover.

At the same time, Amazon also responded to this development, saying it would cooperate fully with antitrust regulators.
