Sony shipped 3.2 million PlayStation 4s between early April and the end of June, the company announced on Monday. This brings the total lifetime shipments since its launch in 2013 to 100m, making it the third game console for Sony to join the club after the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The odd-numbered Sony PlayStation 3 shipped just over 870000 units in its lifetime.

According to Daniel Ahmed, an analyst at Niko, Sony has more news: PS4 ships 100m units faster than any other game console, including its competitors. It reached this milestone in five years and seven months, faster than PS2's five years and nine months. In Nintendo's Wii, the only console shipped more than 100m in six years and eight months.

While the PlayStation 4 is a huge victory for Sony, its console is closer to the end than it was when it started. Although PS4 still has important games, including death stranding, a remake of final Fantasy 7 and our Last Man: part II, Sony's focus is increasingly shifting to the next PlayStation 5.

Back in May, at the investor relations strategy launch, Sony showed a video showing that PS5 would upgrade PS4 performance by improving power and high-speed SSD storage. The new console loads several times faster than PS4 Pro, and there is no significant deceleration in acceleration in the open world.

Other PS5 details confirmed in the demo include console backward compatibility, 8K resolution, CD support, and RayTracing. Sadly, we hardly know when we will get a full PS5 display, let alone when we will buy it.
