MoviePass will return this summer after being raided and revived by its original co-founder, Stacy Spikes. At a press conference on Thursday, Spikes took the stage in New York to trumpet his renewed embattled movie ticket subscription service. There was a lot of hype and, oddly enough, Web3 technology was mentioned. But one thing Spikes didn't mention on stage was MoviePass's meta-cosmic goal.

"now some players in meta-universe are playing games a little bit, when I think you just want to see a movie," Spikes told The Verge. "you don't need fake popcorn; you don't need tomatoes; you don't need anything else there. That's what we're looking at, and this is something we're taking seriously, and we think we're going to be involved."

At Thursday's launch, Spikes unveiled a product that doesn't feel like a potential bomb, but a beloved but disastrous cheap, unlimited iteration of services. He is ready to use almost every means, including digital money and meta-universe, to bring memesub back to life. The problem is that it's not clear whether consumers-- or hell, or even cinemas-- are ready for MoviePass 2.0. Movie subscriptions that rely on VR and decentralized technologies provide the same energy as AMC's entry into encryption. Good, but why?

"the advantage of going to the movies is that it is undisturbed. You can't stop it, you need to be careful, otherwise, you will waste your money," Spikes said. "what we like is that it is event viewing. And I think event viewing can happen in the virtual world."
