Headline: HBO Max is about to launch an avalanche TV series

Neil Stephenson's influential Avalanche (Frozen) is finally ready to enter the screen, even though you have to be careful where you look. HBO Max has ordered an adaptation of a science fiction series that will be written and co-directed by Michael Bacall of Scott Pilgrim Pictures and directed by Joe Cornish of Block attack. Angela Robinson of the World will perform with bacall.

There is no tentative release schedule, and it is obviously too early to know who will play the heroes Hiro and YT. However, this may have been going on for some time. For months, people have been talking about how to revive the attempt to bring Avalanche to the screen with a failed movie.

This is not HBO Max's only big science fiction project. It is the work of senior executives in Dennis Villeneuve's "Dune prequel" series. However, it does reflect the recent impulse to explore large-scale science fiction. Amazon, in particular, seems to have done a lot of publicity, snapping up The Peripheral, which is reportedly adapted from Liu's popular novel. The deal with Snow Crash may not only be to keep up with the competition, but also because it created another show for HBO Max in the early days.
