Privacy regulators have fixed a problem requiring Microsoft to stop sharing encryption keys on its Windows 10 platform. Although it is only a problem with the home version of Windows 10, the advertising campaign launched by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) hopes to completely eliminate the process of sharing keys with Microsoft and force disk encryption keys to be shared only with users.

Fix it has said that Microsoft treats home users unfairly because the enterprise and professional versions of its platform work differently and encryption keys are not shared with the company at all.

"Windows 10 Home does come with a built-in encryption solution, but it only works for some users. It's called 'device encryption' and it only works if you have some hardware and log in to your computer using a Microsoft account-which means you have to trust Microsoft's backup key. This is Microsoft's encryption design: users never have to provide encryption keys to third parties," EFF explained.

While providing keys to Microsoft means that users can recover data, even if backups are lost, these keys may be exposed when the data is leaked, meaning that hackers may steal information stored on the user's computer.

"other versions of Windows 10 do not require you to back up your keys to Microsoft servers," the regulator continued. " Some Windows 10 home users may find it helpful to store backup keys on Microsoft servers so that they can recover their computer content even if they forget their passwords. However, other users may have different concerns and may not be technically accurate enough to delete the backup key and generate a new key. "

It now wants Microsoft to update its home version to keep up with its commercial products.
