Windows updates ensure that you cannot escape Microsoft Edge
In terms of technology, Microsoft's brightest new web browser is actually good. Microsoft Edge is built on Chromium (not Chrome) and provides added value in terms of new features, optimizations, and improvements before Google can even be implemented. Unfortunately, it is Microsoft itself that gives people a reason to stay away from Edge, and the latest updates to Windows 10 and Windows 11 will only reinforce Microsoft's bullish and aggressive image.
Microsoft Edge is a good browser, but certainly not the best of its kind. For some Windows users, it actually has the temperament to be the best, but even those are taken aback by Microsoft's aggressive strategy. Now there are even concerns that Edge is being embellished like Internet Explorer, which has become synonymous with slow, bloated, and invasive.
It wouldn't be a big deal if Microsoft didn't make it inconvenient to switch to the default browser on Windows. In Windows 11, this has become a much-criticized multi-step process that seems to be designed to prevent users from trying. Some parts of Windows can also launch a browser, which will be Microsoft Edge no matter what you set to the default value.
These are links that use the "microsoft-edge://" protocol, similar to the regular "https://" URL, but are only used by Microsoft in some cases." Specifically, these links are used in Microsoft first-party applications, such as in the Settings application or in Bing search results on the start menu. These are intended to be opened in Edge and only in Edge, and Microsoft intends to keep it that way.
