Us lawmakers announce a new bill that may help news organizations negotiate with technology giants such as Google and Facebook
Beijing, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) on Monday, lawmakers from both parties released a revised bill aimed at making it easier for news organizations to negotiate collectively with technology giants such as Google and Facebook.
It is understood that US lawmakers said in a press release that the News Competition and Protection Act (JCPA) may remove legal obstacles that prevent news organizations from conducting collective bargaining and regularly visit relevant content on science and technology platforms without paying a fee.
It is understood that the last version of the bill was proposed in March 2021, but was opposed by two technology industry trade groups, the computer and Communications Industry Association and the NetChoice. Among them, Meta, Facebook's parent company, and Google, which is owned by Alphabet, are members of both associations.
According to reports, the revised bill will apply to news publishers and non-online news broadcasters with less than 1500 full-time employees, and support cooperation among agencies to conduct fairer negotiations and transactions with Facebook, Google and other platforms.
