CTOnews.com, Aug. 24-Apple expanded its self-service program two days ago, adding MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M1 chips, allowing users to replace screens, batteries, and even motherboards themselves. But don't expect to upgrade your laptop, according to 9to5Mac, because you can only buy the same motherboard from Apple as the device was originally equipped with.

CTOnews.com learned that on the self-service website page, users have to enter the serial number of MacBook before they can search for or buy replacement parts. This helps ensure that Apple provides the right parts, but it also means that users cannot buy a motherboard with more memory and storage space.

Members of Apple's self-service support team said that the parts purchased by users must match the original configuration of the device, or they may encounter problems and fail to complete their own maintenance. In addition, if the user tries to order parts that do not match the original configuration, the order will not pass the order verification process. Orders will be cancelled and users will not be charged.

For some MacBook, after entering the serial number, the search tool asks the user to select the GPU, RAM and SSD of their device configuration, and gives a reminder: "your choice must be consistent with the original configuration of your device, otherwise you may encounter problems and cannot complete the maintenance." This page also links to a guide on how to find the exact specifications of the device.
