Micron plans to apply for a property tax credit to build a $160 billion semiconductor plant in Texas

According to news in the morning of August 26, Beijing time, Micron Technology, one of the world's largest manufacturers of semiconductor storage and imaging products, is considering building a new semiconductor factory in central Texas at a cost of 160 billion US dollars. The company submitted an application to the state comptroller's office for a property tax credit in exchange for potential new facilities near Lockhart, a suburban city about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Austin.

According to the application, the project will be built in eight stages and construction will begin in January 2023. A spokesman for the company declined to comment on its potential investment. But companies such as Micron are filing applications before the tax credit, known as Chapter 313, expires at the end of the year.

"We have not made any final decision on the location, time or scale of the expansion," Micron spokesman Moira Whalen said in an email. "submitting these applications now allows us to reserve options for future expansion to meet long-term needs."

This year, there was a record number of applications under Chapter 313 of the Texas tax Code. Another chipmaker, Samsung Electronics, has submitted several applications to build plants in Austin and Taylor, Texas. However, the company said it had no specific plans to build a factory.

Micron pointed out in its application that the high property tax in Texas is not good for developers, and that the tax credit will be a decisive factor in the company's decision to locate its factory in the state.

"as a result, the program would have made higher economic returns outside Texas without Chapter 313 of the tax code," the application said.

Last year, Micron announced that it would spend $150 billion on factories and research and development over the next decade.
