CTOnews.com, September 1 (Xinhua) according to a new draft proposal released by the European Commission, manufacturers that supply smartphones to the European Union will be required to provide spare parts and ensure longer battery life for at least five years from the date of launch of the device, according to MacRumors.

The proposal would require smartphone makers to produce at least 15 different parts, and the battery should still work after 500 charges, rather than reducing it to less than 83% capacity.

CTOnews.com learned that it was reported that phones sold in the European Union must also carry energy efficiency labels, similar to those of washing machines and dishwashers, showing other features such as battery life expectancy and equipment protection against falling.

The draft regulation covers tablets and mobile phones and says the energy consumption involved in the production and use of devices will be reduced by 1/3 by improving the repairability and recyclability of hardware.

In addition, the new proposal also involves software and requires manufacturers to provide security updates within five years after the equipment is out of the market and functional updates within three years.
