CTOnews.com, September 2 (Xinhua)-- according to IDC's latest quarterly forecast for personal computing devices around the world, the PC and tablet markets are about to usher in a period of turmoil.

IDC expects global shipments of traditional PC to fall 12.8 per cent to 305.3 million units in 2022, while tablet shipments will fall 6.8 per cent to 156.8 million units. Inflation, a weak global economy and a surge in purchases over the past two years are the main reasons for the decline in shipments over the next two years.

IDC pointed out that due to the slowdown in consumer demand and the fact that demand for education has been basically met, macroeconomic conditions have deteriorated and corporate demand has been squeezed out and is expected to contract further in 2023. The combined PC and tablet market is expected to decline by 2.6% in 2023 and then return to growth in 2024.

"although demand is slowing, the outlook for shipments is still higher than it was before the outbreak," said Jitesh Ubrani, IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers's research manager, CTOnews.com learned.

"as the economic headwind accelerates, we expect the consumer market to contract further over the next six quarters as a result of deteriorating consumer sentiment," added Linn Huang, vice president of device and display research. "before the next major update cycle, a timely economic recovery may boost some of the growth we expect in the external year. Although sales will not reach the peak of the epidemic, we expect the consumer market to move towards a higher end of the market. "
