CTOnews.com Sept. 13, on the day of the official launch of iOS 16, Apple released a new supporting document containing release notes for standard AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max firmware updates. Apple said the page will outline the new features and changes included in the AirPods firmware update.

The latest firmware version of Apple AirPods is:

AirPods Pro: 4E71

AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation): 4E71

AirPods Max: 4E71

AirPods (1st generation): 6.8.8

However, the support document doesn't say much, at least the 4E71 version only mentions "bug fixes and other improvements" without any details.

CTOnews.com learned that in iPhone updated to iOS 16, users can open the "Settings" application, navigate to "General" → about "→" AirPods, and then click "firmware version" to find a link to the AirPods firmware update support documentation. This support document is similar to the one Apple maintained for AirTag firmware updates earlier this year.

Firmware updates are provided periodically when the AirPods is charged and within the Bluetooth range of the iPhone. In addition, iPad with iPadOS 16.1 (released in October) or higher, and Mac with macOS Ventura can update the AirPods firmware automatically.
