Beijing, September 21 (Xinhua) A substation in Monterey, California, caught fire. It was operated by Pacific Power Plant (PG&E) and was caused by Tesla Megapack.

By late Tuesday morning, Pacific Watt had no power outages, customers were not affected, and no one was injured at the scene. In April this year, Pacific Watt launched the 182.5MW Tesla Megapack system in Moss Landing, California, a project called Elkhorn Battery.

The Megapack is a super-large battery similar to energy storage systems made by companies such as ABB and Northvolt. Grid operators use this battery to transfer excess power between counties or states. It can also store intermittent power and discharge when demand increases, or when the power grid is interrupted.

Tesla Megapacks has also had an accident in Australia, which shows that there are some challenges in using new technologies to improve the efficiency of the grid.

There are also two energy storage projects at Moss Landing, one operated by Pacific Watt and the other by Vista, Texas. A spokesman for the Vista said their facilities were not affected by the fire. It should be noted that there have been two incidents of overheating at Moss Landing's Vista facility before.

After the fire broke out, California closed California Highway 1 (Highway 1) for several hours, and the traffic changed direction away from the point of fire.

A spokesman for Taiping Electric Power Company said: "when a problem is found, the safety system operates as designed, and it automatically disconnects the battery storage facility from the power grid."
