Apple agrees to negotiate with Australian Apple Store Retail Union

CTOnews.com, Sept. 22 (Xinhua)-- Apple agreed to negotiate with Australian unions after being called a bully and after an Australian union asked the country's Fair work Commission to intervene.

Apple's recommendations to the Australian Fair work Commission include a minimum wage rate of 17 per cent above the weekend penalty rate. Employees will receive higher salaries after 8:00 in the evening local time. In the past, jobs after 10:00 in the evening began to charge higher wages.

Apple is also willing to provide 2.8% wage growth in 2023 and then 2.6% in 2024 and 2025. The union wants Apple employees to have at least one weekend off every month and two consecutive days off while working on weekends.

Gerald Dwyer, national secretary of the Australian Association of Store, Distribution and Joint employees, said Apple should not be allowed to bargain with the Fair work Commission and accused the company of acting like a "bully in a cheap suit".

"this large multinational should think more about the welfare of its Australian workforce rather than trying to impose a predetermined outcome that it wants to impose, rather than bargaining," Dwyer said. "this is Australia, not the United States."

Apple is also facing more and more unionization efforts in the United States. In June, workers at Apple stores in Maryland voted to join the union, and it was reported that Apple had no plans to oppose the vote.

However, according to an employee of Apple Townsend, an August report showed that Apple representatives made anti-union talking points.

In April, Apple hired anti-union lawyers at Littler Mendelson, a San Francisco-based law firm that has an advantage in handling labor and employment lawsuits.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple has more than 65000 retail employees, including those who sell, repair and troubleshoot products and services. The company's retail business accounted for 36 per cent of its revenue of $366 billion in 2021.
