International Energy Agency: global electric vehicle sales are expected to hit an all-time high this year
September 26, according to foreign media reports, according to a recent research report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electric vehicle sales are expected to reach an all-time high this year, accounting for 13% of the total global light vehicle sales.
In May, IEA released a report showing that global electric vehicle sales doubled to 6.6 million units in 2021, accounting for nearly 9 per cent of the car market. By contrast, only 120000 electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2012. In the first quarter of this year, global electric vehicle sales rose 75% month-on-month to 2 million units.
The agency highlighted some specific challenges to electric vehicle sales: first, infrastructure constraints hindered electric vehicle sales in many parts of the world; second, the exorbitant initial purchase price of electric vehicles also hindered further sales growth.
In a recent report, IEA said that while there were encouraging signs of progress in a number of areas, more needed to be done to get the world on track to achieve net zero emissions by the middle of the century.
