Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, September 27 (Xinhua)-- the DART spacecraft launched by NASA passed through the solar system at a hypersonic speed on the evening of September 26, local time, crashing into a distant asteroid. This is testing the world's first planetary defense system designed to prevent potential doomsday meteorites from colliding with Earth.
When DART hit the asteroid, the live screen darkened, so we couldn't see how much depression DART's impact had caused to the asteroid. Fortunately, many telescopes around the world are tracking asteroids that DART hit, and Project ATLAS used four telescopes around the world to capture a video of the moment of the impact, which occurred about 7 million miles from Earth.
ATLAS, the final warning system for asteroid ground impact, is a collaborative project between NASA and the University of Hawaii to detect all asteroids, including those that may pose a threat to Earth, scanning the sky for moving objects several times a night.
The ATLAS telescope targeted Didymos and Dimorphos during Monday's impact by the DART probe, which at a speed of more than 14000 miles per hour hit the smaller of the two asteroids, Dimorphos, an asteroid about the size of the Roman Colosseum orbiting Didymos. It can be seen that the moment of the impact emitted a dazzling light.
CTOnews.com has learned that it is not known whether DART has successfully completed the scheduled impact mission, and that the results will not be available until further ground observations of the asteroid next month. But NASA officials were satisfied with the results of Monday's experiment, saying the spacecraft appeared to be operating as designed.
