CTOnews.com, Oct. 2 (Reuters)-Reliance Jio will launch an economical laptop priced at $184 (about 1312 yuan) with a 4G SIM card designed to replicate the success of its low-cost JioPhone in India, a highly price-sensitive market, Reuters reported.

Jio, India's largest telecom operator, with more than 420 million subscribers, did not respond to the news.

Reported that Reliance Jio has reached a cooperation with Qualcomm, Microsoft, plans to launch this JioBook notebook. The laptop will be available to corporate customers such as schools and government agencies from this month and is expected to be launched to consumers within the next three months, according to sources. Like JioPhone, a version that supports 5G will be launched later. It is reported that the laptop will run Jio's own JioOS operating system, and applications can be downloaded from JioStore.

Since its launch at the end of last year, the JioPhone has been the best-selling smartphone in India for less than $100, accounting for 1/5 of the market in the past three quarters, according to Counterpoint.

One of the sources said that the JioBook will be produced locally by contract manufacturer Flex, and Jio aims to sell "hundreds of thousands" by March next year.

India shipped 14.8 million PC units last year, led by Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Lenovo, according to research firm IDC.

CTOnews.com learned that Jio, which raised about $22 billion from global investors such as KKR & Co Inc (KKR.N) and Silver Lake in 2020, subverted the world's second-largest mobile market with a cheap 4G package and free voice service in 2016, followed by a $81 4G smartphone.
