CTOnews.com, Oct. 15 (Xinhua)-- the fourth long-term crew of astronauts launched by SpaceX to the International Space Station returned safely to Earth on Friday, and the capsule successfully splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean near Florida. The mission was launched in April and the astronauts have been in the orbital research lab for six months.

SpaceX's manned dragon spacecraft, named Freedom, began to stay in orbit on April 27. The fourth long-term astronaut team includes 49-year-old NASA astronaut Schell Lingren, 34-year-old compatriot Jessica Watkins and 47-year-old Bob Haines. And 45-year-old Italian Samantha Kristofferty, commander of the International Space Station expedition. Watkins became the first African-American woman to participate in a long-term mission to the International Space Station.

During their stay at the space station, the crew circled the earth 2720 times, about every 90 minutes, according to NASA. The team, named Crew-4, is the fourth official group of long-term astronauts launched by SpaceX to the International Space Station since it began providing flight services to NASA in May 2020.

CTOnews.com learned that for most of the ISS crew, their main mission is based on science, including dozens of experiments and technical demonstrations. The focus includes the study of changes in human cells induced by microgravity, similar to those related to aging, and the effects of on-orbit dietary improvements on immune function, gastrointestinal health and nutritional indicators. They are also involved in the study of fire and fuel behavior in weightlessness and the cultivation of plants with liquid and gaseous growth materials instead of soil.
