CTOnews.com, Oct. 17 (Reuters)-Kakao Corp, South Korea's dominant chat app operator, said on Monday that it expected widespread service disruptions to have a limited financial impact on Kakao and its main departments.

On Saturday, a fire broke out in the data center of ClearC Banqiao data center in the southern suburb of Seoul, South Korea, causing a power outage and paralyzing about 32000 servers.

CTOnews.com learned that service disruptions led to outages of some of the country's most commonly used applications and websites, including Kakao and the company's online payment, games and music streaming services.

These failures highlight South Korea's reliance on Kakao messages, the default means of communication for many government and business services.

The South Korean government requires that measures be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, including ensuring that data are backed up and accidents are reported promptly.

Kakao messaging app Kakao Talk has more than 47 million active users in South Korea and 53 million users worldwide, Kakao said in an August report.

NAVER, another South Korean Internet company, used the same data center, but resumed service within hours. This is because NAVER also distributes data in other data centers such as Chunchuan, and even if there is a problem, it can resume normal operations through other data centers.

South Korean police and fire department said on October 16 that after investigation, a preliminary study concluded that the fire in SK's Cunc Banqiao data center the day before was caused by electrical factors that caused a fire around the battery in the electrical equipment room.
