October 25, according to foreign media reports, a survey released on Monday shows that among the top 100 semiconductor companies in the world by market capitalization, there are only three South Korean companies, namely Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and SK Square.

Among the top 100 semiconductor companies in the world by market capitalization, there are 42 Chinese mainland companies, 28 in the United States, 10 in Taiwan and 7 in Japan.

Among the top 100 semiconductor companies, the market capitalization of South Korean companies is declining. Samsung Electronics, for example, ranked No. 1 in market capitalization in 2018, but lagged TSMC and Nvidia in third place this year.

At the same time, SK Hynix's market capitalization ranking dropped from 10th to 14th. SK Square, which was spun off from SK Telecom in November last year, was ranked 80th when it was founded, but has now fallen to 100th.

In the chip business, TSMC is a strong competitor to Samsung. In early October, TSMC reported sales of about 27.3 trillion won in the third quarter of this year, up 48% from a year earlier and a record revenue in a single quarter.

By contrast, the stock market expects sales of Samsung's DS (semiconductor business and device solutions) division to be 24 trillion-25 trillion won in the third quarter of 2022, lower than TSMC's sales in the third quarter. If these estimates prove accurate, it will be the first time that TSMC has overtaken Samsung to become the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer.
