CTOnews.com, October 26 (Xinhua)-- Apple today launched a new ad space in the App Store App Store, allowing developers to promote their apps in more places, including the main "Today" home page and the "you might like it" section at the bottom of the list of individual apps.

Just a few hours later, some well-known developers, including Marco Arment, Simon St ø vring and others, complained of obnoxious ads for gambling apps that were out of their control on their own App Store lists. The issue was also highlighted in a tweet shared by Federico Viticci, editor-in-chief of MacStories.

"now that my app's product page shows gambling ads, I really can't accept it," Arment tweeted. "Apple shouldn't accept it either."

As Arment points out, Apple offers advertisers the option of displaying their ads in a different app category than their own, allowing gambling ads to appear in a list of unrelated apps, such as the podcast app Overcast.

CTOnews.com has learned that the emergence of gambling ads in App Store as a whole has drawn some criticism, with some accusing Apple of being too greedy and deviating from the policy that the company adhered to under former CEO Steve Jobs. Apple earns 15% to 30% of its revenue from in-app purchases in advertising and gambling apps.

In addition to upsetting some developers, Apple has faced charges of anti-competitive behaviour by allowing apps to run ads in lists of other apps. In a tweet last week, legal expert Florian Mueller argued that "you might also like" ads are "another way to increase effective app tax rates, forcing developers to buy ads on their own app pages to prevent others from attracting users away".

In August, Bloomberg Mark Gurman said Apple hopes to nearly triple its current advertising revenue to at least $10 billion a year in the future. Starting next year, search results ads based on keywords will appear in Apple's mapping app, Gurman said.

MacRumors has asked Apple for advice on whether it will consider tightening rules around advertising.

"Apple App Store begins to show more ads: cover the" Today "home page and the" you might like it "section, and the national area will not be affected for the time being.
