CTOnews.com On October 28, Sony PlayStation 5 sales in Japan exceeded the milestone of 2 million units.

According to Famitsu's sales figures, Sony PlayStation 5 has sold 2,027,783 units in Japan as of October 23, 2022, including 1,749,737 PS5 optical drive consoles and 278,046 PS5 digital consoles.

CTOnews.com understands that Sony PlayStation 5 reached this figure in 101 weeks, or about two years, compared to 90 weeks for PlayStation 4 and 73 weeks for PlayStation 3.

However, Sony PlayStation 5 suffered from supply shortages and relatively high prices after its release, all of which affected sales figures. In addition, the popularity of Nintendo Switch in Japan has also affected Sony PlayStation 5 to some extent, the former has sold 25 million units in Japan.

Sony's shift in development focus from targeting Japanese players to Western markets may also be seen as a factor in slowing PlayStation 5 growth. Compared to other regions, Sony PlayStation 5 sales in the UK reached 2 million in 98 weeks, the same time as PlayStation 3. According to Sony, global PS5 shipments reached 21.7 million units in the three months ended June 30, 2022.
