Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Oct. 30 (Reuters)-Google is planning to launch a legal challenge to prevent a ruling by India's antitrust regulator to change its Android operating system, Reuters reported. Google fears this will limit the way it promotes its platform.
Since last week, Google has been fined $275 million (about 1.999 billion yuan) for two antitrust decisions in India, one for its policy of charging in-app commissions and another for abusing its position in the Android operating system market.
CTOnews.com learned that the ruling comes as Google faces increasing antitrust scrutiny around the world. Last month, Google suffered a major setback when an European court upheld a 2018 ruling saying it had largely confirmed a decision that Google had "imposed illegal restrictions on Android mobile device makers". Google plans to appeal the decision and will face a record fine of $4.1 billion (about 29.807 billion yuan).
Although the Indian Competition Commission (CCI) ruling on Android involved a smaller fine of $162 million (about 1.178 billion yuan), it worried Google as it sought broader remedies, according to three people familiar with the matter.
One of the sources said Google was concerned that CCI's decision could increase regulatory pressure in other jurisdictions and planned to file a legal appeal to block the enforcement of antitrust orders within weeks.
Google declined to comment on its legal plan, reiterating its statement last week that CCI's order was "a major setback for Indian consumers and businesses, posing serious security risks and raising the cost of mobile devices for Indians."
