NASA announced the beauty of the earth at night, with bright lights and shocking lights.
The images were taken by NASA's Visible Infrared Emission Imager, or VIIRS, instrument on board. NASA calls the images "night lights," and their structure reflects the population distribution of the entire planet.
Scientists also foresee the technology being used to monitor short-term power outages, such as wars, storms, earthquakes, and simple power outages.
