CTOnews.com November 7 news, today, the International Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Association (SEMI) pointed out in the semiconductor industry annual silicon shipment forecast report that global silicon wafer shipments are expected to increase by 4.8% year-on-year in 2022, reaching a record high of nearly 14700 million square inches (MSI).

Growth is expected to slow in 2023 due to macroeconomic influences, but will rebound in the coming years as demand for semiconductors from data centers, automotive and industrial applications is strong.

CTOnews.com understands that SEMI says silicon wafers are the basic building material for most semiconductors, and semiconductors are an important component of all electronic products. Highly engineered wafers can be up to 12 inches in diameter and can be used as substrate materials for most semiconductor devices or chips.

It should be noted that the above data include polished silicon wafers and epitaxial silicon wafers shipped by wafer manufacturers to end users, and do not include unpolished or recycled silicon wafers.

In addition, SEMI data shows that global silicon wafer shipments reached a new record of 3.741 billion square inches in the third quarter of 2022, up 1.0% month-on-month and 2.5% year-on-year.
