CTOnews.com NVIDIA said Wednesday it signed a multi-year collaboration agreement with Microsoft to develop an AI supercomputer to handle intensive AI computing in the cloud.

CTOnews.com understands that the AI computer will run on Microsoft's Azure cloud, using tens of thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia's most powerful H100 and its A100 chip. Nvidia declined to disclose the value of the deal, but industry sources said the A100 chips cost about $10,000 to $12,000 each, while the H100 costs much more.

In addition to selling chips to Microsoft, Nvidia said it will also partner with the software and cloud computing giant to develop AI models. NVIDIA will also become a customer of Microsoft's AI cloud computer and develop AI applications on it to provide services to customers.

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence models, such as those used for natural language processing, has dramatically driven the demand for faster and more powerful computing infrastructure.

Nvidia says Azure will be the first public cloud to use its Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking technology, which runs at 400 gigabits per second, connecting servers at high speeds, which is important because heavy AI computing requires thousands of chips working together on several servers.
