CTOnews.com November 18 news, October 2019, the eighth generation of Volkswagen Golf was officially launched in Wolfsburg, Germany. It has been 45 years since the birth of the first generation of golf.

Now, Thomas Schafer, chief executive of the Volkswagen brand, says the company will not abolish the Golf name. Instead, the model will appear as part of the ID series of electric vehicles, and the existing eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf will retire around 2027 to 2028.

He said the ID naming convention will continue because it is already well known to buyers and is related to electric Volkswagen.

"there is a link between Volkswagen and ID and there is no need to cancel," he told Autocar at the Los Angeles Motor Show. "We have iconic brands, Golf and GTI. If we let them die, it's not too crazy. We will stick to the ID logic, but the iconic models will use the previous name."

He gives an example: the Volkswagen ID.Buzz already has such a name, but ID family models don't need to be followed by a number (such as ID 3, ID 4, etc.). To this end, Volkswagen "may have ID Golf". He added: "We will not give up the name golf, never."

CTOnews.com learned that Schafer made it clear that the Golf would not replace the Volkswagen ID.3, and that the two cars could be seen as different models in size and positioning. When asked if there was room for both, he replied "yes". According to reports, "ID.3 has never been the successor to golf, it is more like an upgraded version of golf."
